Giving Your Pet Eye Drops and Ointments at Home: A Gentle Guide
We understand that administering eye medications at home can feel a little daunting, but with a calm approach and a few gentle techniques, it becomes much easier for both you and your furry friend. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you provide the best possible care for your pet's eyes:
Preparing for Success:
- Clean Hands, Happy Paws: Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after giving your pet their medication.
- Gather Your Supplies: Have the medication, clean cloth, and some favorite treats ready.
- Create a Peaceful Space: Choose a quiet spot where your pet feels relaxed and avoid any sudden movements that might startle them.
- A Helping Hand: If possible, ask a friend or family member to gently hold your pet while you administer the medication.
- Read the Label: Take a moment to carefully read the medication label to understand the dosage and any special instructions.
Administering Eye Drops:
1. Finding a Comfortable Position:
- For smaller pets, hold them gently in your lap or on a stable surface.
- For larger dogs, have them sit or stand comfortably.
2. Applying the Drops:
- With your nondominant hand hold your pet’s chin and gently lift their head upward.
- Hold the dropper bottle with your dominant hand and rest it on the top of your pet’s head above their eye.
- Gently use your hand/fingers to pull back the forehead skin above the upper eyelid until you can see their eye.
- Hold the dropper just above their eye, being careful not to touch the eye itself
- Gently squeeze a drop into their eye.
- Allow them to blink, which helps spread the medication.
- Gently wipe away any excess medication with a clean cloth.
3. Reward and Praise:
- Immediately reward them with a favorite treat and gentle praise.
Administering Eye Ointment:
1. Positioning and Preparing:
- Follow the same steps as for eye drops.
2. Applying the Ointment:
- Follow the same steps as for eye drops.
- Gently squeeze a thin ribbon of ointment between their eyelid margins.
- Allow them to blink to distribute the medication.
- Gently wipe away any excess ointment with a clean cloth.
3. Reward and Praise:
- Immediately reward them with a treat and gentle praise.
Helpful Tips for a Smooth Experience:
- Practice Makes Perfect: If your pet is resistant, practice gently holding their eyelids without medication.
- Distraction is Key: Use treats or toys to keep them distracted during the process.
- Routine is Comforting: Administer the medication at the same time(s) each day.
- Patience and Gentleness: Be patient and gentle, especially if they're anxious.
- Proper Storage: Always store medications as instructed on the label.
- We're Here to Help: If you have any difficulties or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.
